We are having a baptismal service at a lake in a couple of weeks. Last year we did this and it would have taken your breath away. The morning started off a little cool and breezy but as we made our way to the water, the breeze stopped, the sun shone, the water stilled and everyone on the dock became very quiet. During the actual "dunking" 5 pure white ducks swam around those being baptized. God's presence was so awesome it still gives me shivers to describe it a whole year later. At the conclusion of the service everyone on the dock started clapping then went back to what they were all doing. We were asked by the resort owners if we would host another service this year and open it up to all the campers so we are. Once again we are hosting a baptism. Does anyone have suggestions for a song we can sing accapella at the beach as the candidates complete their baptism? We want something that people from almost any background or denomination will know and can join in. |

"Amazing Grace" is the first thing that comes to mind, that is pretty much universal.........I LOVE the song "I will never Be" but that's not one everyone knows.... |

Where did you do this baptismal service last year? Anywhere in Ca? My husband and I thought we saw one going on at a resort we were staying at. I don't remember where, but it would be cool if it was the same place! As for suggestions, I'm thinking a medly of three-four choruses. Not that I have any specifics, but if they were just choruses, you could probably have more songs to choose from. Many know choruses, but have a hard time on the verses. If you have a congregation that knows hymns, you could sing, "When We All Get To Heaven." It's been over-used in my circles and turns our congregation off because of it, but maybe it would work for you guys. Rachael |

Rachael, I don't think it was our service you witnessed. I'm in Canada and it was a tiny lake in central Alberta that we were at. I think choruses would be good - I really like the idea of Amazing Grace too. That was the first one that came to mind for me. |

Two that we have used for baptisms are; Baptize Me R. St.James and Dive S.C.Chapman. We have also used a piece by Randy Travis- Pray for the Fish (story line- guy who is being baptized is so bad that the fish will be killed "when the sin starts rollin' off the likes of him"). We tend to have people clapping and whistling when people are baptized at one of our services. Celebration is a good thing. I would hesitate to just "open it up to anyone". Do you do any teaching about what people are undertaking before you baptize them? Just a concern. |

Teleman, I think you may have misunderstood the order of the events. Yes, we definitely do teaching and have the candidate meet with the elders before being baptized. What happened is we brought our service from the church to a camp setting where we hosted our own service in a tent. During the service we walked down to the water where a number of people not involved with the service were already gathered fishing, swimming, etc. We privately entered the water and as we did, everyone on the dock and the beach started to observe and witness what was taking place and that's when clapping and celebration took place.
This year, once again we have a candidate 'from our congregation' who has been through baptismal teaching and has chosen to be baptized at the lake. The only difference is this year we have opened our service to everyone in the campground to attend and 'witness' the baptism. As you suggest, this is a joyous time for celebration and if witnessed by nonbelievers, can open a door for many questions to be answered, which is our intention. |

This does not fit your bill of something everybody would know, but it might be worth teaching them. It is called "I Was There to Hear your Borning Cry". The very first time we did it people cried! It has become a tradition with us.
The following link (thanks Google search) has more info on the song.
