ss: Does any one scripture passage shape your life of worship more than another?

CT: Ephesians 5: 1-21. This is a refining and guiding passage for me. This passage has little to do with music and much to do with my lifestyle. Isn’t that it?! I especially like verses 17-21. That I may so be filled with the Holy Spirit that singing, making music, giving thanks and serving others is just an overflow.

ss: What one word would you most like to hear people including when they talk about worship?

CT: Lifestyle

ss: Does anything about the current "worship scene" make you sad?

CT: I am somewhat saddened that there is a "worship scene." I am excited that there is a renewal, but I don’t want people to think that this is what is cool right now. Our worship to God is our life process, not just the latest CD.

ss: Describe your golf game?

CT: Getting much better. I love to play, and I live in The Woodlands, TX---a golfing paradise. I am very competitive, so I struggle that I am not quite as good as Tiger.

ss: Your new CD, "The Noise We Make," includes many different styles of music. Talk a little about that.

CT: I did not do this on purpose. These styles are just who I am and what I love to play. Anyone who hears us play can expect some surprises. I was raised on country music, so some of that will always be in my music. I enjoy experimenting with drum loops and layered keyboard pads. I seem to write mainly from the acoustic guitar, so it has a presence in most every song. On the whole, though, the sound of the "fab four" cannot be beat. No, I am not talking about the Beatles, but the basic electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar and drums set up. Whatever the style, I hope the music moves people to sing, to shout, to dance, to cry and to love our God.

Twenty-eight year old Chris Tomlin has a passion for life that is reflected in everything he does... especially his music. Leading worship with a joyful heart, Chris has been writing songs for the past eight years that are sung by people around the globe.

Chris lives in The Woodlands, TX, where he leads worship weekly for The Harvest, a contemporary ministry of his home church. As well, you can find this Aggie back home at Texas A&M most Tuesday nights for Breakaway.

When he’s not leading worship at home or around the world, chances are good you will find Chris on the golf course or knee deep in a river somewhere out west.

sixsteps: Who is Chris Tomlin?

Chris: There are a few things that I do know about myself. For one, I want to live life to the max. The hope and peace of Jesus is what leads me to that kind of abundant life. Also, I really like to be around people. I really enjoy my friends. Music is such a big part of who I am. I’m thankful for the love that God has given me for music; otherwise, I would be a miserable lead worshipper.

ss: Lots of people are using the "worship" word these days. What does worship mean to you?

CT: Worship, in its simplest form, is ascribing our greatest value on or to something or someone. I bring my worship to God because of who He is and all that He has done. There is no other person or thing greater than our God.

ss: So, how do you fit into that definition both as a person and as a lead worshipper?

CT: I understand that God has given me a choice to worship Him. My worship to God flows from a thankful heart, and I try to lead others to see how great He is and how thankful we are to be His.

ss: Describe your worship music?

CT: I want my music to be very corporate, where anyone can sing it. I also want it to be excellent and loud.

ss: Give us 2 sentences of wisdom for the young/aspiring lead worshipper?

CT: I would say to remember that people are more important than your music. Smile when you lead, it goes a long way in connecting with people.

ss: Does your guitar/s have a name?

CT: No nicknames, but I did just get a new Collings acoustic guitar. It is a perfect sounding guitar.
