Billions Of Lead Worshippers

Translation: we are an incredibly small part of the vast chorus of heavenly voices.

If thoughts like these make your flesh squirm, don’t despair. Being small is not a bad thing. Besides, it’s the truth. So get used to it. Embrace it. For genuine joy comes not in trying to be big, but in recognizing that though incredibly small, we are known and treasured by an infinite God. Getting comfortable in the “skin” of our smallness allows us to lead and live in a way that amplifies how great the Father is.

But don’t stop there. Notice how this Psalm ends. David prays, “let my words and thoughts be acceptable in Your sight.” (v.14). In God’s sight! That tells us – oh tiny ones that we are – that we are in His gaze. Amazing!

He knows your words. He hears your thoughts. The very stirring of your heart is visible to Him. So look up. Not just at the heavens, but their Maker. He knows each star’s name... and yours, too. So you don’t have to worry about everyone else knowing who you are. Instead, you can spend your energy making sure they know Him. For in the end, the only stars God needs are the kind that lead people to Jesus.

He’s got billions of them.

Humility and worship are inseparable. That’s why the most effective lead worshippers bear the marks of genuine humility in their souls. Not a false or hollow humility, the kind we pretend to have because we know we should. But, a true view of self that results from an unobstructed glimpse of Holy God. After all, humility is simply seeing ourselves in the light of God.

Sometimes as leaders, we think we are more important than we really are. But looking at the first few phrases of this Psalm, we see there is no shortage of effective lead worshippers in the world. In fact, the universe is filled with them.

Think about it:

This very moment, all around this earthly ball, the heavens are doing the very thing they were created to do. The heavens are giving glory to God. And they are doing an incredible job of it! Their witness is so expansive that no one escapes the sound of their voice. Wow!

God is so determined to receive the glory He alone deserves. He has stationed billions of lead worshippers throughout the universe, constantly bringing the news of His mighty wonder to every single person on the planet. It makes sense that a God of this magnitude has no use for oversized people... certainly no need for oversized leaders. He is already big enough.

Still need a nudge toward true humility?

It may help to remember that you are a human being and, as uniquely gifted as you are, there are over six billion other uniquely gifted humans on Earth. Add to this the fact that Earth is one of only nine planets orbiting the sun. And the sun is only one of several billion stars in the Milky Way. And remember that the Milky Way is only one of 30 galaxies in its local galaxy cluster. And this cluster is only one of many more in the inconceivably vast Virgo Supercluster. And that the inconceivably vast Virgo Supercluster is scarcely anything at all... just an infinitesimal dust mite in an ever expanding universe.
