Our lives are in a state of constant motion. Few things remain the same, which is beautifully exhilarating yet painfully unsettling. I was reading the book of Hebrews a while back and 13:8 jumped off the page: “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday today and forever”. I realised what a comfort and an inspiration that verse is to us in a constantly changing world.
I’m always looking for song ideas that explore the character of God. We have many corporate worship songs about how we feel, and our response to what God has given us. We need more songs purely focussed on who He is. That genre of song reminds us of His greatness and His glory and is an essential element of our worship.
So, Hebrews 13:8 became the springboard for a new song. When the chorus was complete, I wrote verses that built on the theme. I explored His everlasting existence as the “Uncreated One”. This characteristic makes Him the “only firm foundation” for our lives. He is permanently “loving, true, merciful and good” and His faithfulness never fails.
Some time later I was studying Old Testament figures and the way they knew God. Many of them referred to Him as “Yahweh”. Suddenly that name for God resonated with me – using it in my own conversations with Him reminded me that He is the same God who looked after Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses… I wanted to include it in the Hebrews 13:8 song! That led to a Bridge section, which is based on the name Yahweh.
During my transition from the UK to the USA, the song became a huge encouragement to my heart. God was my firm foundation, in a time of total change. I especially remembered Him in that season as Yahweh, the God of Abraham. Abraham walked a similar road of transition when God said, “Leave your country and your fathers house and go to the land that I will show you. I will go with you and I will bless you”. He faithfully walked beside me as I followed His voice to a new land as has been so faithful to me here.
