Above All Else: The Story Behind The Song

The year is 2000 and the location is my Oxford University graduation ceremony…Looking around at my friends, I know where they are going next; she’ll be an Attorney, he’ll be a Banker, she’s going into TV Media, he is off to do a Science PHD… There was a huge call for us to decide what to aim for in life, and I felt the need to really seek God about His plan for my future.

My reflections and times of listening to His voice for answers resulted in writing a “Mission Statement” for my life. The one sentence statement I came up with was: “Above all else, Jesus give me Yourself”. It summed up what my priority would be in the moments and years ahead. It committed in ink, my chief desire in life. It would serve to be a compass for me in times of decisions and a reminder of keeping first things first.

The mission statement developed into a song. If there is one song that really represents my heart, it would be this one. It sums up “my hearts cry and my prayer for this life” that I would daily have more of Him and pursue that ‘above all else’.
