I bought my first Mac a year ago, and it made sense from the moment I turned it on. Within 30 minutes it was hooked up to my keyboard and I had 4 tracks laid down for a new song in Garageband, the free music production software that comes with every Mac. It has all the basic features and sounds that you’ll need to get you’re creative juices flowing. I can’t speak for everyone but I use Apple for 2 main reasons - #1: They’re more reliable and #2: The technology doesn’t get in the way of my creativity.

Eventually I came to a point where I needed more advanced features, sounds and editing capability and got a copy of Logic Pro. After installing the program and its 4 gigabyte library of instrument sounds and samples – I came to the conclusion that I’m never going need another piece of software!

In addition to Logic Pro there is also a slimmer version called Logic Express, meant for people who need more than Garageband but may not need the entire set of tools that Logic Pro provides. It’s also much cheaper!

Outlined below are some of the most applicable ways that these programs can be used to help you do your job, make the band sound better and capture your creative heart.

Who Needs a Synthesizer?

Logic Pro comes with an amazing collection of virtual instruments! With a Mac notebook computer and an affordable midi controller you’ve got an amazing Grand Piano, B3 Organ, Vintage Electric Piano, Orchestra, Drum Kit and much more only a click of the mouse away. Garageband also has a nice collection of virtual instrument sounds and that rival many low-to-mid grade synthesizers.

I haven’t used the built-in sounds on my keyboard for the past 3 months. I just take my laptop and midi interface and connect it to the midi output of whatever keyboard I am playing and my favorite sounds are right there waiting for me. The best part about it – it’s easy!
