Verse Text: “He spreads out the northern skies over empty space,
He suspends the earth over nothing.
He wraps up the waters in His clouds,
Yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
He covers the face of the full moon,
Spreading out his clouds over it….”
I recently spent a few hours on a plane reading through the whole of the book of Job. I don’t think I’ve ever read the whole thing in one sitting before. I was prepared for the suffering and anguish contained in the book. But something else took me surprise – the amazing poetry of the book. Lines of beautifully intense revelation that describe the Creator and His creation. The song Wonderful Maker was birthed from one of these amazing poetic passages found in Job: “He spreads out the northern skies over empty space, He suspends the earth over nothing. He wraps up the waters in His clouds, Yet the clouds do not burst under their weight. He covers the face of the full moon, Spreading out his clouds over it...” (Job 26:7-9) The whole book of Job is full of these mind-blowing descriptions of our Creator God.

If you weren’t a Christian, you could read the poetry in this book and it would stand up as mere poetry. But, as a Christian I know this is more than just poetry – this is the divine revelation of our Almighty God – every line fuels the soul with another glimpse of His unfathomable worth. Yet, it doesn’t end there. In chapter 26:14 comes a verse that puts all of this extravagant poetry, as powerful as it is, into it’s proper perspective: “And these are but the outer fringes of his works; How faint the whisper we hear of Him! Who then can understand the thunder of His power?” What an astounding, and humbling, line. All these lines of revelatory poetry that stir up our hearts and minds are merely a glimpse of the whole picture. We only see and hear in part. These lines are the ‘outer fringe’ and a ‘faint whisper’ of who God is. An echo of His greatness. Who then can understand the thunder of His power? The next time you need a bigger picture of God, return to the book of Job. Delve into these wonderful descriptions of His grandeur. And as your soul begins to awake with wonders of who He is, remember, this is just a whisper of His greatness...
