During the recording sessions for The Mission Bell, Martin said, “ I’d love to write a song called Miracle Maker”. We started playing around with a chord sequence, that we’d worked on in a sound check, and ended up having a real “holy moment”. The song was written and recorded in about an hour and a half.

On our minds was the account in John 5:1-15 of the miracle at the pool in Jerusalem called Bethesda. A man who had been crippled for 38 years, had been waiting for the angel to stir up the waters day after day, year after year. When the waters moved, whoever got in first, was healed of whatever disease they had…Amazing!

This man was so infirm, that when this happened, someone always got in first. Little did he know that today was the day he would come face to face with the Miracle Maker Himself.

Have a read of John 5:1-15

We all need a miracle! The miracle of salvation, miracles of healing, miracles of Holy Spirit breakthrough in our day to day lives. These are just a few examples of God breaking in and doing something sovereign and supernatural.

This man was broken and desperate. He thought that his only option was to get in the pool. He had waited for so long and there’s a lesson here: How many times do I want it now! I don’t want to wait!

Look at this: Prov 8:34-35

34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors. 35 For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favour from the LORD; NKJV

And also...Rom 8:25

25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. NKJV

You might say, “Well he had no choice but to wait in his condition”. And you’d be right! But look at Jesus.

When Jesus came to Jerusalem he didn’t visit the palaces and royalty, but the “hospitals”. There was a great multitude of sick people waiting for the waters to stir, but Jesus picked out probably the most desperate, the weakest, the most disappointed and maybe the most senior.

You see, Jesus delights to help the helpless!

There’s another miracle referenced in the song with the line: “Just one touch is all I need”. This comes from the story of the woman who had been bleeding for 12 years.

Have a look at Mark 5:25-34

The desperate woman pushed through the crowd because she knew it would only take a touch to be made well!

So let us push through in our desperation for more of God in our lives. Knowing that all it takes is one touch or one word from Jesus and our lives will be changed forever. Let us be patient and wait for God’s perfect timing.

Finally let our response be:

“Holy, you are holy,

Who was and is and is to come.

Jesus, precious Jesus,

Thank you, Saviour,

I’m walking in the shoes of my miracle maker.

I’m standing with the faith of a miracle maker.”
